Newborn Session Experience

WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

  • It will be around 80 degrees because the womb is 96-98 degrees so baby has to be comfy

  • A loose diaper and zip up onesie is recommended to not startle baby.

  • We have snacks and refreshments because newborn sessions take 3-4 hours.

  • Bring a paci if you give one. If not, it is fine.

  • You do not have to bring anything other than formula if you use it and diapers.

  • A space heater is for baby to stay warm while being naked (some babies do not like being naked).

What questions should you ask? Here are a few!

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you licensed?

  • How can I see your portfolio?

  • What is your turn around time for photographs?

  • What are some of your favorite poses?

  • What are some things to help us prepare?

  • When is the best time to contact you? (What are your business hours?)

These are important to not only get to know your photographer but also their customer service and experience. Not only just for newborn photography but for all sessions. However, this blog is about newborn photography because your photographer is working with your baby. It is important to know they are in good care. Yes newborns are very flexible but newborn photography is more complex than you might think.

Once you book, you will receive all the information to help plan and prepare you for your newborn session. However, babies work on their on time. Since I have 10 years of experience, I do know how to settle and navigate your little one. I do not guarantee certain poses but I will try based on how baby feels. Babies go through so many stages in a short time. For example, cluster feeding or growth spurts. Some babies tend to eat more at a newborn session because they are being moved a lot. That’s why we recommend feeding before coming or at the studio if you live far. We will try to stick to your schedule while I look for the cues of baby being hungry (balled fist, eating fist, mouth open searching). Gassy or colicky babies can be a little sensitive to laying on their stomach but again, everything is based on baby. I am explaining based on my years of experience and 400+ babies. You don’t have to bring anything to your session.

If baby comes awake, we will do wrapped shots first then go back. If baby seems sleepy, I will do table poses. Depends if baby is content. They are so little and love to see everything going on. I plan according to them and what they are comfortable with. I typically do 3-4 table poses with either hands, bonnets, or pillows. Variety is key so you have plenty of options to choose from.

Wrapped newborn photographs are some of my favorites. I tend to do 5-8 depending on how many we can get in. These are precious to me because they look so peaceful. We will do colors based on your questionnaire, maternity photographs, or babies complexion. My clients love different colors because it is hard to typically choose one color scheme. Usually between table and wrapped shots, baby is ready to eat. Sometime before. Again, it is based all on baby. I mean look how precious that awake shot is?

Family shots are ALWAYS recommended. You can also have your hair and makeup done. Mom wore the same dress at her maternity session. Family shots only take 15 minutes or so depending. You can choose wrapped shots or naked shots depending on your preference. Coordinating photographs is perfect for an album or artwork. Galleries are typically 45-65 (not including color). 1-2 weeks after your session, you will return to the studio to choose your favorite digitals and products. I promise I will be there to help you with whatever you decide. 3-4 weeks after your products are ready for pick up at the studio! AHHHH. That is the best part! It always feels like Christmas. You will get a care package that will help you care for your art plus an awesome referral card. Of course there’s always more because I love to spoil my clients.
